California End Of Life Option Act. Effective beginning january 1, 2022, the amendment: Signed into law by governor jerry brown in october 2015, the act took effect on june 9, 2016. This bill would enact the end of life option act authorizing an adult who meets certain qualifications, and who has been determined by his or her attending physician to be suffering from a terminal disease, as defined, to make a request for a drug prescribed pursuant to these provisions for the purpose of ending his or her life.

The legislation included a provision that would expire at the end of 2025 unless new legislation is passed. The end of life option act gives mentally capable, terminally ill adults with six months or less to live the option to request prescription medication they can decide to take to peacefully end unbearable suffering.
